memory lane

Some friends of mine are reminiscing about fond childhood memories. I thought I might pull one out of my brain and post it here. Lets see....

I remember one sunny summer day, I must have been 11 years old, I had the first crush of my life. I met a boy named Michael. We played all day in his cousins back yard. We played cowboys and Indians and all sorts of shootemupbangbang games. I had so much fun. I remember it so well because I was known in my neighborhood as a very shy girl. I didn't have any friends my age that lived close and it was great having someone to play with, even if it was just for one day. I remember going back to school that fall and writing his name all over my notebook. lol. I never saw that boy again, but I remember having a great time.

A strange coincidence though, I met a boy when I was 14 years old that lived in that same house that I eventually married. :) My husband moved into that house with his family. Strange. That house must be a good house. It has had good people in it.

I also remember many summers as a child camping at the beach driving our dune buggies. That was fun times. We had a blast. Now as an adult camping doesn't seem to be as much fun. There is lots of work involved. Cleaning, cooking, cleaning, cooking. YUCK! Now I know why my mom was so cranky! She had 5 kids to cook for and to clean up before letting them go to bed! LOL!

I remember winters playing on snowmobiles at my uncles cabin too. There were some good times as a child. If I think hard enough I can remember them. Like sitting on the curb eating filberts with my little brother and sister, or playing in the swimming pool in our backyard.

The best day of my childhood though would have to be hands down, the day I met the man I would eventually marry. He was so cute playing basketball with his friends. He had long hair and a blue baseball cap with a car on it. He was wearing blue polyester sweatpants and a too tight t-shirt. Hey, it was the early 80's after all. :) He was sooooo cute. But he liked my bestest friend. My bestest friend did what any best friend would do in that situation. She turned him down. :) Good girl! I loved her. I miss her. :( But he finally asked me out a couple years later. It all worked out in the end.

Any favorite childhood memories? I'd love to hear them.

My brother is a year and a half younger than me, and I remember how FUN it was the first Christmas I didn't believe in the red dude anymore, but he still did.
Helping my mum talk about stuff in front of him, having a nice secret and watching his anticipation and excitement, before and during Christmas day. I would have only been about 10 or so, but I remember it very well.

My dad used to play fastball, and we'd drive to exotic locations (ummm, small town Manitoba, probably a maximum of 40 minutes away from our house) for tournaments on weekends. There was one place with good, old fashioned, break-your-back teeter-totters, and this weird contraption:
2 two by fours, each one has one half of a pair of shoes nailed onto it, and there were 4 or 6 pairs in a row, and you had to try to get everyone walking at the same time to move. Weird!

I guess my best general memory/feeling is that I always felt safe at home. We didn't have a lot of money, but I was never hungry, the house was always there (sometimes by a thread, but I didn't know that at the time), I didn't have the best clothes and they were often hand me downs from older baton girls, but I never went to school naked, and I found it exciting to get a huge bag full of "new" clothes all at once.
